So this is "dark" in terms of events and actions that take place, I didn't necessarily find it "dark academia"
There's murder, and drugs, with some questionable actions but besides that it's not very dark academia vibes in my opinion
THAT being said I did really enjoy the story line, and everything, especially the growth we see with the characters.

In Cold Blood is the perfect blend of secrets, paranoia, love, obsession, and of course, a murder mystery on top of that. The way the story has been penned is amazing, especially regarding the characters and their intricacies. In Cold Blood does absolute justice to its characters, and honestly, I don't think I'll ever get enough of Xavier and Thea. They're unconventional, messy, and toxic but addictive all the same!

It’s a 4.25⭐️ for me.

The first thing I did is that I read the blurb and I was intrigued by it, after that getting to know what happens and how it happens was the priority. Murder mystery meets dark romance, I am impressed. The concept is highly fascinating and I was on the edge throughout the book. What I did was make theories, cussing on characters, blaming the scenarios and it was all very entertaining for me.

The main character’s name is Theodore which feels so very ancient to me but short of it is ‘Thea’ which I liked a lot. Xavier is a very cute name too. The plot is damm strong and addicting and it is well executed. I loved how refined the author had worked in detailing and bringing life to the situation. It felt like I was watching a movie or show.

The only thing I hate in a book is cheating and miscommunication when both the mains know that they can’t live without each other and this book kept that persona almost till the end. It was hard to read it through with that emotion in my mind even though I knew somewhere in my heart that he will not cheat. It breaks my heart to see the things happening but luckily in the end, the air gets cleared up, and it is stated that he never cheated in reality. That was the little peace for me on that front.

Both the characters and their friends are lovable and caring. Thea is sweet, strong, and very intelligent. Xavier is a mystery, a lot about him is anticipated, and he hides his emotions well. I feel that the situations are not ideal and take a toll on mental health. I am pleased with the ending and the way it took.

It begins with a murder…
and you can’t help but be intrigued by the mystery and who dun did it of it all.

This story follows two students, and their group of friends, attending Cambridge Law. Two complete opposites that are drawn together like moth to a flame. But their relationship? Toxic. A chaotic mess. The lies, secrets, man… he was manipulative. A hard shell to crack, really.

Now, I know this story was technically “dark academia” it wasn’t for me. Well, not in the way I know the sub-genre.
It is dark due to the murder/ mystery, the drug/ alcohol usage, and its setting, but other than that I wouldn’t call it dark academia.

As for the plot, I found it quite interesting. Despite having some trouble getting into it towards the first half of the book. The murder mystery aspect of it does keep you wanting to see how this story unfolds. Along with the character development.

Overall, I liked the story and would recommend to give this a chance.

What can happen when a group of law students becomes tied by one crime?

.„Law is on the side of those who lie best, mellilla.”
“Then why do I feel like running away when thinking of facing the consequences.”
“Because guilt is a powerful emotion that you, out of all people, have a hard time silencing. Running away is a powerful instinct.”

The reason I decided to read this book was mostly the academic rivals trope I saw on the promotional graphics, so I was a bit disappointed that there was no rivalry between Thea and Xavier, only some light banter and competitiveness once in a while. Thea however had a rival in a shape of another character we can talk about academic rivals, but not between potential lovers.

I was really curious about the murder mystery and how it’s going to be executed, especially that I’m a huge fan of academic trope. A group of friends? A murder? Count me in! I don’t know why, but for some reason I thought the grip of friends: Thea, Xavier, Will, Ophelia and Elias are going to try and solve the said murder mystery, but it’s more “If we were villains” kind of mystery, where one of our characters did it, we just don’t exactly know, who.

I had my suspicions and I was right. Maybe I’d be more hesitant if the crime plot in the book had been developed more, meanwhile it felt like a background for the academic life and Thea and Xavier’s love story. I actually didn’t find it dark at all! Do I mind? Not at all.

The truth is, I actually really enjoyed this! I wasn’t bothered by any of those things, since eventually they’re not the most important part of the story. I actually found that I liked this book more than I expected to like it. I fell into it and couldn’t stop reading about Theavier/Xavea (help) addicting, complicated relationship.

I really like the author’s writing style. It felt like I was flowing through the book. You won’t believe me when I tell you that I only ever read “In cold blood” at work and still managed to finish it in 3 days. I can’t have paper book at my workplace, but I could carry the ebook around and I would dive into it literally each break, every spare moment I had in between my tasks, and it was a delight! Such an easy, quick read, while simultaneously being interesting and involving!

However, I’m surprised it’s not just a one-track story. The plot focuses on toxic relationship as well, codependency, on loving a person and being aware they are not good for you. That they gaslight you, hurt you, take you for granted, yet not being able to leave, because you love them so much. It was portrayed and explained so well!

.„I’ve heard it all. Deep under this thick cover of naiveness, I’m smart enough to realise what he does. I believe everyone who’s ever been manipulated by their loved one recognises it for what it is. The thing is – we love too much to let it go and walk away. Even though we should.”

Sometimes I felt just as manipulated and unsure as Thea had because of Xavier’s behavior and words. Since the beginning, he always seemed to be sweet and caring, yet there was plenty of moments of doubt to his behavior that I could see with Thea’s eyes.

.„There must be some madness in love, Thea. Otherwise, it’s just boring, and I don’t tolerate boring.” This is the only answer I’ve ever got from him this one time I decided to ask if there’s someone else. If I’m just going crazy, letting myself believe that he in fact has more than me by his side.”

I found her to be not always a reliable narrator, because of her excessive emotional and psychological reliance on Xavier, when it came to both the relationship and the crime mystery—which added interest to the story. That made me feel like the reader’s feelings and point of view was influenced for most of the time, as Thea often questioned her sanity, her rightness and wrongness and ability to make rational decisions when feelings came into the picture. I think her situation presents one of an addicted person—addicted to someone else, which clouds judgement, especially when this someone is present in every aspects of your life, just like Xavier was present in her both private and academic life, and then he was part of the whole murder thing, too.

.„Maybe we’ve always been more comfortable in chaos.”

I only wish there was more mystery to this whole crime plot, just simply more of it, because it was rather a college life NA story with no darkness to it, just some twists here and there. There was also a lot of tell, no show. I sometimes found myself being annoyed with Thea. I eventually found explanation for each of her behaviors, but still I thought she was a bit short sighted and opinionated.

It was slightly weird weird to me how she seemed to not know important facts about her best friend’s personal life, they literally never talked about it, or how she didn’t know anything about her boyfriend of two years, although I know he didn’t make it easy for her at all. It didn’t bother me enough to make me enjoy the book less, though.

What are some more things you’ll find in “In cold blood”?

➳ sibling and family relationship
➳ insecurities
➳ communications issues and fixing them
➳ mental health

.„But I love the way it hurts because as badly as it may end, I love the high that Xavier brings.”

Okay so this book was interesting. Unlike other books , this book is more about dealing with a relationship while also dealing with your mental health , racism , parents and a hot boyfriend who doesn't share much which is something new. Usually we watch characters fall in love slowly and then go into relationship later . However we get to see them be in a relationship from the beginning and then fighting to keep the relationship going despite problems being thrown at their faces . I liked it but not enough to rate it 5 stars because there were many instances which were completely unnecessary. However it kind of added the dramatic element to it.

I liked the FMC . She never liked the idea of others helping her with her battles which is not a smart idea but she is one of those who doesn't want to depend on others. Xavier, the MMC will come off as annoying at times, but he is her biggest fan despite having his secrets which made the story look cute. He has a very pretty nickname for her. Read the story if you wanna know what he named her.

I recommend this book to everyone. I will definitely check out more of the books written by this author. Thank you for sending me the arc in exchange of my honest review.

In cold blood arc review

After finishing this book the only thing that runs through my mind is Thea and Xavier.

This is my first Anna book and it definitely won’t be my last. when I saw the tropes in this book I was immediately intrigued by all of it and reading it I completely feel in love with story and plot.each character was interesting in the one way harboring their own secrets that made this completely thrilling to read about.if I could describe the vibes in this book as anything I would say season 4 of you (but better)

Omg did Xavier and Thea make my heart completely ache there were so many parts where I wanted her to leave but I also stay because there relationship was anything but perfect but gosh it was so raw and real I’m sure that’s why I loved it so much because i became completely invested in there relationship and growth not only as individuals but together.

and let me tell you it did not disappoint although Xavier was very toxic in the beginning you just couldn’t help but love him because even when he messed up his growth spoke volumes.

“I hate that she thinks I’m going to let her leave. Let her go. There’s no fucking way in hell or on earth. She’s mine. Mine.”
The way Xavier was so devoted to Thea actually gave me lifeee.a true lover boy

I had completely no idea what to expect with this one and I wasn’t disappointed it’s just one of those books that just continues to get better the more you read and uncover. And the mystery aspect had me hooked even when I had things to be doing I couldn’t not stop thinking about this book this was another anticipated read for me and it was truly everything and more.

There’s so much more I want to say and especially about Thea and Xavier they will truly never leave me 🤍 even when I was conflicted with there love story I was always rooting for there end game

5/5

Xavier Blake is everything I need to avoid.

My academic rival. My brother’s best friend. My boyfriend.

His mind games – I can survive. His lies – I can see.

His secrets – I know he has them.

Addictive dark romance. Set in Cambridge University, Thea and Xavier, her brothers best friend, are inseparable, toxic and addictive. Would you kill for the one you love?

This is been a fantastic read and could not put it down, Xavier got me in the chills and you won't forget his name. Thea was really trapped in the relationship she did not know her way out or maybe not want to... I recommend this book if your in a mood for dark romance that becomes a dark fairytale.

"We all feed on lies when the truth is too ugly"

A brother's best friend dark academia romance filled with angst, suspense, and mystery with Thea and Xavier.

Their relationship I deemed unhealthy, toxic. Her knowingly making excuses for him being "a control freak, lying egotistical bastard..... and the love of my life." His secret, her secret. Both of them lying.

Xavier's character is so intense with his fire and unsaid thoughts. His love for Thea is deep and raw.

What hurts the most?
The lie, the deed, or the love?

"We all feed on lies when the truth is too ugly"

Timeline jumps from current, to past with the events leading to the current situation Thea, her friends, her boyfriend, and her brother find themselves in while studying law at Cambridge.

New to me author and quite a page turning read! Was completely captivated by the emotions written and the little teasers that the reader works towards connecting all the clues with.

I honestly liked this book more than I thought I would. This book was a brother's best friend romance book, but it was focused more on the murder mystery mixed in the book. I enjoyed the plot through the story.
One major part I loved in this story was seeing Xavier's growth. When I first met him in the book, I honestly couldn't stand him but when I read further, I understood his character more. This book wasn't really dark in my opinion, but I loved it.

*ARC REVIEW* right off the bat I love how mysterious this book was. I swear everything felt like a secret. The relationship, the deed, and the past. Which left me constantly curious to know what will happen next. The deed (which I’m not gonna say what it was) is what the majority of this book is centered around and I loved the way it was written because even though you read what happened there are still blanks that weren’t filled in until you near the end of the book. It made it more interesting because throughout the book your left still wondering.

The tension in this book is another thing to point out. I thrived on it. There's so much tension between all the characters. Some are from hate, love, disappointment, and fear.

There's this overall fear surrounding what happened that night and if they can pull off keeping it quiet. After that night you can see how they are all coping differently. It was a great way to show just how different all the characters are and see the group dynamic. Also seeing how the group dynamic has changed because of that night.

Now to talk about the relationship. The angst and toxicity are wild but at the same time redeemable. Honestly, they just needed to learn this little thing called communication. I found their relationship really interesting. Thea is a pushover for sure. Though when I think of a pushover I also think naive. But she wasn’t naive. She was actually really smart and aware. She’s a good example of how complex humans are. Xavier is cold and secretive but he cares a lot more than he leads on. As I said if they would just communicate, then I doubt they’d have many problems. I mean they seemed so perfectly in tune with each other. But I like that they weren’t perfect because I’m a sucker for character development.

Overall I loved this book. The vibe was everything. Dark academia is definitely one of my favorite sub-genres and I’d recommend this to anyone who feels the same.

This book really threw me, the first half I had trouble getting into it, then the last half I couldn’t flip the pages fast enough.
Xavier & Thea have this toxic relationship. He makes her think he can’t be trusted, the mind games he plays with her are f***ed up. Because he does care, and things aren’t what others think, yet he does nothing to set them straight. It’s disrespectful to Thea, but he just doesn’t see it. Thea was strong and spoke up to everyone except Xavier. He had such a pull on her. Their relationship was such a toxic mess, it consisted on lies, secrets, so many feelings unsaid.
I loved the story plot- college, murder, mystery, and yes even the toxic relationship between Xavier and Thea. I loved seeing Xavier’s character development in the end. Thea walking away really forced him to acknowledge things about himself and get help. The Xavier/Thea we see at the beginning of the story is nothing compared to how they’ve both grown by the end.

This book follows a group of Cambridge law students who are partnered together for a school project. They all get along well and are friends, except for Samuel. Their first study session ends rather abruptly, and the story follows what happened. Xavier and Thea start the book as a couple, but their relationship ebbs and flows until the ending.

I’m really going to try hard not to spoil this book, here I go…the book kicks off with a BANG, so keep up, and don’t worry if you feel like you’ve been dropped in the middle of a story; it’ll all blend spectacularly.

Xavier and Thea are polar opposites in every way, but they challenge one another and cling to their imposed challenges. Secrets are what they know and keep. However, an unfortunate night spirals their lives out of control.

Xavier, initially, I didn’t quite understand how to digest this man. He’s mercurial, secretive, and manipulating. He’s practically a vault and difficult to crack.

Thea, like Xavier, was difficult to understand. She’s quiet, shy, and a bit evasive. I wasn’t sure where her allegiance stood or her drive of what makes her her. She’s a different MFC/heroine Anna has written, but for all the people pleasers out there, you’ll love her and resonate.

Overall, Thea and Xavier are intellectuals, but together their rational reasoning skews. However, it’s their intelligence they must rely on to survive.

As always, Anna introduces and develops side characters that they’ll cling to you. Here’s hoping that there can potentially be more…👀

ARC Review~

This book is super interesting because the whole story is shrouded in mystery. We start off with some kind of crime being committed but we don't know what's happening and then we have to go back and get a sense of what happened. Our main characters are Thea and Xavier who both go to school at Cambridge Law and the story is told from both of their povs. At first I was like oh their relationship is cute and interesting. But the more we dive into their past and present the more that I started to realize that they were so toxic together. Thea knew and accepted and I could see why, Xavier is just so charismatic and persuasive. I wasn't sure whether I was supposed to be rooting for them or not. Especially with them hiding their relationship from everyone around them.

Then the suspense reaches a climax with a murder but once again we as the readers are not quite sure what happened and I actually enjoyed the way the whole scene was written and told from Thea's point of view. Now everyone is anxious and afraid of what could happen if the truth gets out. Fear causes us to act out and do things we normally wouldn't. While there was a moment where I was super worried for Thea I also feel like there are things that she needed to go through in order to come out stronger.

What happens when two people who are complete opposites get together? The answer is complete chaos. Thea and Xavier couldn't be more different and yet they both felt compelled to each other. Their relationship was kept a secret because Xavier is theas older brothers best friend. They all attend Cambridge law together which is how they met. She tried to play hard to get, but gave in at the end. Unfortunately for her Samuel, a person she hated, found about their relationship and outed them to her friends and brother during a mock trial study. Things took a turn for the worse and all of a sudden a crime has been committed. Can these two really overcome anything? Their relationship will be put to the test that is for sure.

ARC Review for 'In Cold Blood' by Anna Widzisz

How to get away with murder?

The story is set in on the Cambridge University grounds and follows Thea Moore, a law student along with her brother Will and the group of their mutual friends, including Will’s best mate, Xavier.

The plot is a multi – track, as we’re presented with the acadamic lives of the characters, the toxic and hidden romantic relationship of Thea and Xavier and a case murder that occurs at some point of the story. And the group of the characters are set to be prime suspects.

I wouldn’t call the story dark or hard on the academic aspect, as both elements serve only as a background for the twisted love story of Thea and Xavier.

And I loved that part a lot. As much as they are in love with each other and codepended, they are both aware of their unresolved past issues, whether they come from their childhood experince or the unhealthy parents’ relations. The growth of the characters and the rich study of dysfunctional relationship are two things that keep you focus and alert at all times.

I was hoping we could get more of the murder case since it happend on the university grounds and among the law students, but still the law related parts were so well written I sometimes got lost in between the lines of the law jargon.

Lastly, I enjoyed the author’s writing style a lot. At first I felt it was too clean and polished, but then I simply glided through words and pages and the story got more layers and it was engaging and intresting after all. And as a L2 reader I was more than pleased with the British English lexis.

“There is something in his eyes. Some kind of magic that pulls me in. Dirty, dark and overwhelming but so beautiful.”

3/5. A murder, a group of university students studying law and the mystery behind who committed the crime. This novel is marketed as ‘A Dark Academia Romance’, and although it is dark in terms of themes ie: murder, toxic relationship, drug/alcohol usage that leads to addiction, it wasn't dark academia. At least, not as I was anticipating. As for the romantic relationship, it was a toxic and chaotic mess to say the least. The hero and heroine were the complete opposite of each other causing their relationship to be filled with constant back and forth drama that grew to be repetitive. I didn't vibe with the characters which caused me to not care as much as I wanted to about the storyline. The premise alone was the main reason I kept reading as it was very interesting and I was eager to know how the story would unfold. When I got to the ending, I was left unsatisfied. The fact no real consequences occurred for any of the characters for their actions just didn’t sit right with me and was very unrealistic. This novel was all in all, an average read that kept me turning the pages but left me discontented by the end. If you decide you’re going to read this, please check trigger warnings!!

Theo and Xavier. They have a night and that night turns in to something more. He is her rival in a way but for sure her brothers best friend. I don't know how to review this book and not give something away. It is about a murder, a group of law students, the who did it and a bunch of questionable actions. I also know your opening this book thinking Dark Academia...I love those kinds of books. I don't think that I would call this a dark book in the sense that I am use to reading. Its about all I read. I am a dark romance reading person. But this was not dark to me. There are some shady things that go on in this book. It wasn't a bad read it lost a star from me because it wasn't really dark like I was looking forward too. Thea and Xavier are characters that seem to me like you either like them or hate them and it will take you a little bit to decide.

What. The . Hell. DID I JUST READ.

I am absolutely in love with the storytelling.
I have never been more confused but also confident in something my whole life.
These characters took me for a ride. Damn, that blurb was not joking about mind games. I think I might be colorblind because I kept missing the red flags I was supposed to pick on and i swear I was trying lol
Firstly the ✨vibes✨ are definitely very old money, dark academia-ish. The characters are equally intriguing and even knowing what's going on in their head you can't help but feel like a spectator. You never know what to expect because you can't actually get a read on them and I loved that. God, I don't even know what to say without spoiling the whole thing because it's truly an experience, going in blind is the best. Just know your braincells will hurt from trying to figure everything out. I actually think I'm more impressed with what the author did with the psyche of the two main characters than the actual "plot twists" that were supposed to instill doubt or shock. They were great, but in comparison I was more enthralled with the dynamics of their relationship. Lastly, I'm kinda worried about myself because I was completely seduced by Xavier. Allegedly, the man is toxic but I couldn't care less for 90% of the book 🤣 I've been consuming too much dark romance help-
He calls her love and mellila which is latin for little honey

Tropes: academic rivals, fatal attraction, brother’s best friend, dark academia, opposites attract

Often, first appearances are deceiving. But it didn't fool Thea, at least she thought. Xavier Blake was her academic rival, her brother's best friend, and her boyfriend. She can survive his mind games. She can see his lies. She's well aware he has secrets. She never anticipated the night they shared. It turned her world upside down. Finding a way out seemed futile. Afterward, her life depended on him. Their own dark fairtale was coming true. Questions plague her when it comes to what hurts the most? The lie, the deed, or the love?

Focused around a group of Cambridge Law students, this murder mystery pulled me in and had my mind enraptured from start to finish. It was told in very descriptive detail, which created a clear picture behind by eyes. My heart went out to Thea because what she and Xavier shared was truly toxic, and I didn't know whether it was even worth it for them to stay together. I stayed perched on the edge of my seat as the story progressed. For a relatively short read, it still packed a punch. I have to agree with other reviews that it wasn't exactly what I would call dark compared to many other dark romances I've read. I still recommend this read. This is my honest opinion, freely given.

This is a Dark Academia standalone book by Author Anna Widzisz.

This story starts off with a wild beginning that takes you trough a series of events that shape the entirety of this book. The story follows Thea who is a Law Student at Cambridge University. She is a year behind her brother Will, who is also studying law. She meets her brother at a bar one night and is introduced to Xavier (Will's Best Friend). Thea and Xavier start a hidden relationship at the beginning of her first year....This relationship is outed one night and a series of events occur the cause everyone involved to make decisions that will control their future.

This book has a very interesting take on events that can change your whole life. What was so different about the book is how you see how differing opinions and actions occur from one event. A very traumatic event..... A truly unique view and I enjoyed it very much. The toxicity and growth of Thea and Xaviers relationship spans the entire book. I loved the ups and downs and how they each had differing views which would dictate their actions. I did find that there were certain parts of the book that felt a bit long or over descriptive. This made me lose focus on the story a few times but other that that, I truly enjoyed the book. The mystery and conclusion of the story were fun to discover and I look forward to reading more from his author. This book gets 4 Stars.

(Thank you Peachy Keen and the author Anna Widzisz for the eARC in exchange for a spoiler free review)

This book is a first from this author. The tropes of murder mystery and academic rivals pulled me in to apply for it.

The book started off well with the first chapter, it was mysterious and it made me continue reading the book. After a few chapters the pace started to slow a little and it got a little uninteresting but it picked up speed again. Literally was like being on a medium-paced rollercoaster.

I did find the relationship dynamic toxic, there was manipulation and miscommunication. Sure every romance book has the third act but I wanted more from this book since it was a murder mystery after all. Though I must give kudos to the author for portraying realistic relationships.

I agree with the other reviews that there was not a dark academia aspect in this as advertised. I didn’t really find the rival aspect there. It wasn’t really a dark romance either.

A good attempt though it was still readable just that I wished it was better!

This book comes with a content warning, please head authors advice

If murder mystery is your forte, you will definitely enjoy reading this book.

The author intricately crafted a book that intersects with real life issues, exploring the dynamics of a toxic relationship, the angst and suspense of committing murder and the impact of mental health, but more importantly the consequences that it has on the characters and how they move forward from this altering moment.

We do get to see growth and development of these characters through their strengths and weaknesses, what shapes these characters as they learn and accept their truths, despite their flaws, they are in fact human beings who all feel but handle what happens to them differently.

Yet, despite their shortcomings, when they came together, it was nothing short of being downright dirty and wicked. It was a beautiful mix of pain and pleasure, one that would not be denied with every chance they got.

And there HEA was imperfectly perfect!

Recommend both author and book!

Arc review. Omg I could not put this book down as soon as I started it! The relationship between the two mcs and how overprotective Xavier is of Thea. I felt for her and was angry on her behalf of how hard everyone around her was intent on breaking them up when they learn of the relationship. I get her brother looking out for her but it was annoying how much he just assumed things about Xavier instead of actually trying to talk to him and learn if that actually was the case or if he was judging things incorrectly. The mystery throughout the book kept me wondering what actually happened and how it would effect everyone. This book was very well written and I like that she addressed the characters changing once they work things out and realize these changes need to be made in order for things to work out between them. He's not at the top of my list but Xavier is definitely on my list of favorite morally grey characters.

Well this was different. Never quite read a book where they are already boyfriend and girlfriend but it still feels like a slow burn. It was a different dynamic and I enjoyed it.

They were quite toxic and there were times where you just wanted to shake Thea and maybe slap her a little, because the girl had issues with self love. Xavier was also your typical tortured hero who is sof only for her.
The all back and forth with cheating did not make sense to me, I mean, if they were dating (even secretly) why would he not want her to feel safe in their relationship?
Only after the murder he realizes he actually sees a future with Thea, so the pacing there was odd.
The all "Who did it" was not surprising, so that's why my rating was not higher. I would've love for it to be someone we never saw coming.

So this book..... I really liked the idea and many individual elements, but overall it just didn’t blend well together.

I liked the main character. I liked the premise. I LOVED the law school elements and morals and ethics of the laws that were involved with the plot....

But the overall plot was VERY hard to understand and it felt super unfinished. There were so many elements that didn’t make sense and the overall romance between the FMC and the MMC was not well introduced and their turmoil was sort of blah and seemed a little contrived.

Also... the twists kinda came out of nowhere and I wasn’t as amazed by them as I should have been.

Overall, this read was interesting, but it could have been so much better.
