The Guild #2

Dead Drop

Rate this book
dead drop

noun

a method of espionage tradecraft used to pass items or information between two individuals using a secret location.

All I’ve ever known is the Guild. They clothed me, fed me, raised me. They trained me. And in return I became their perfect weapon, their loyal soldier, their deadly asset. For as long as I can remember, the Guild has been my life. But now, it’s about to become my death.

Not everyone is cut out to be a mercenary. I’ve watched countless colleagues fail in their missions and pay the ultimate price. I’ve watched peers lose their minds with the weight of the work we do, and pay with their lives to keep our secrets.

I never thought I would become one of them.

No one quits the Guild. But I sure as hell won’t stick around to be killed by some coward in the shadows, pulling strings to see me fail.

How do I run from the deadliest of hunters?

How will I hide, when they have eyes everywhere?

By making the enemy of my enemy, my friend.

The Guild was my whole life. My purpose. My mentor.

Now I’ll do anything to escape them. To escape him.

Even if it hurts.

Especially if it hurts.

I love this series so muccchhhh especially since now that we have Kai and Leon both in the same space and both wanting Danny in this book. I will say I didn't love it as much as book one because I was just obsessed with that whole kidnapping plot and Danny's control over the two men. We get less of a plot in this one and more focus on them as characters and their relationship and them playing games with each other. I'm still excited for the last book, especially after that cliffhanger! Dang Tate James and her endings!!!

Wow. The first book was so good that I should have known that the second one would never live up to my expectations.

A whole lot of nothing happened in this book. Like, there were so many words, and yet all of the interesting stuff was just shoved into the last few chapters. There is truly no plot for the first 90% of the book other than the annoying love triangle and speaking of:

The majority of the book is just Kai and Leon fighting. And at first, I was fully understanding Danny’s mindset, like why choose when you can have them both? But now I’m firmly #TEAMLEON. Kai turned into such a whiny little bitch in this book. Like he was annoying me the entire time. He was like this total badass in the first book but he regressed SO HARD in this book and was offering nothing? I’m confident that Danny & Leon can take care of everything on their own, without Kai.

Anyway, I hope the 3rd and last book is better. I honestly am not excited to read it after this one was such a letdown but we’ll see….

A tour de force of dynamic character writing juxtaposed with adrenaline-packed action. I have been completely captured by gritty and emotively complex Guild world. It's bold, it's edgy, it's creatively inspired, and its smashingly entertaining. I AM OBSESED with these characters and their tangled dynamic- Dead Drop is truly intoxicating from start to finish!

Per usual, I don’t want to spoil anything. And please don’t try to spoil yourself. The relationship dynamics are exactly as they should be- get on this ride, don’t worry about the destination. But know this- it is a WILD RIDE. The Guild series is everything you love about a Tate James reading experience- on speed. Everything is EXTRA- extra intense, extra sexy, extra dark, extra dangerous, and EXTRA COMPLICATED. The storytelling is just dripping with charisma. There is a force to this writing, a confidence to the prose- it’s the perfect backdrop to these dynamic, over the top, captivating characters. Their energy just vibrates off the page. The bold, edgy, unapologetic storytelling is what makes Tate so compelling- and I’ve never seen her strength better deployed than when it comes to the Guild world. I was enraptured.

While there is all sorts of action and adventure, twists and turns, jaw dropping moments, and need-a-shamwow sexiness, at its heart Tate is giving us a story about identity. About how identity is shaped by both nature and nature, about the power and perils of confronting one's identity. Our heroine Danny lives a life pretending to be many someone elses- with practiced ease she slides into her characters flawlessly. She spends more time being someone else than she spends being herself, and even then much who she is has been shaped by the Guild, by her lack of connection, by her lack of ties and lank spots in her mysterious background. Despite this, in book 1 she’s definitely self-actualized, unapologetic about who she is, what she does, what she wants. She’s content in that…….well, until she isn’t. As her relationship dynamics with Kai and Leon become increasingly complicated, Danny finds authentic connection outside of her few friends, forcing her to tap into parts of who she is that have long been suppressed for her survival. Dead Drop exposes the softer sides of this character, forces her to break past walls so think she barely realized she had them. And turns out that’s the most dangerous thing Danny has every done- because it calls into question everything she thought she was, everything she thinks she is.

Honey Trap exaltedly built up this brilliant character, while Dead Drop gleefully starts to strip her away. Helps her discover the most vital information- who she is when everything she’s hinged her identity on is at risk. And she’s not the only one in this existential crisis created as the result of a catalytic connection- Kai and Leon too confront parts of themselves. But who will be standing when they come to terms with it all? These are relationships that have been doomed from the start….and hope and feeling are very very dangerous in this world.

Tate does some of the best character writing of her career in this sequel- she exposes these characters so fully it’s like you can see the tick, tick, tick of their brains. Despite being so different, despite all having some sort of crisis of self, these characters all have such an intense loneliness to them, a desperation to be seen and understood, to be CONNECTED. Their connection prompts their self-journey, and the dynamics only get MORE complicated (and more entertaining) in Dead Drop.

But these are not characters who are just lonely and lost- these are characters who are dangerous and who have secrets. And that combination makes for a lethal and volatile combination. The cliffhanger brings that to a jaw dropping head- perhaps one of the most emotionally affecting final few chapters of recent memory for me when it comes to Tate. I am living for this series, and I can not wait for the finale!

This book! Ugh i have been thinking what Leon and Kai would do when they finally meet cuz those two guys are over the top possesive of their girl and i love it! and Tate made me wait a lot for their meeting! But the wait was worth a while cuz i love Danny’s moments with each one of them. She is such a badass and takes no bullshit. 😭😭Kai was my fav in the last book but now i cant decide and i can only hope that Leon and Kai gets along with each other. The ending tho! But i am not surprised by the shocking cliffhanger cuz Tate always does that 😭 ends her book with a cliffhanger that makes u want the next book asap!

4.25 stars!!

I really enjoyed this. In pure Tate fashion this book did not disappoint. Once I started reading it, I remembered why I loved Danny so much. She's strong, fearless, powerful, badass and honestly one of the most unique FMCs I have ever read.

Luckily this book picks up IMMEDIATELY where book 1 ends. Leon, Leon, Leon. I will say book one was Kai's book. I was solely team Kai. Until this book. LEON is an obsessive, crazy man whose only goal now in life is to protect Danny. He is if you were to mix a sociopath with a golden retriever. Deadly, but obsessive, and I loved it.

I will say I missed Kai in the beginning of the book a little bit, but I was SO happy when he returned. He realized also, that he can't live without Danny, whatever the consequences might be.

Things I loved - multi POV. YES THANK YOU TATE. This is what I felt was missing in her prior RH (Mk and Hades) was more of the male POV. I love getting to see in their heads. The SPICE. Hot damn Tate, the spice was good. Real good. And the plot, I loved not knowing what was going to happen in the next chapter. There wasn't much I predicted (although one thing I was very proud of my self.. but I won't spoil hehe).

What I didn't love - I felt the first 50ish% of the book read like a love triangle. And to put it plan as day. I HATE LOVE TRIANGLES. Like won't pick one up. I know that Tate was being more secretive about the relationship dynamic, but in my reading, I struggled with rooting for either of them because I felt like it was a triangle. Until one particular scene (again not spoiling), but it became clear to me that it is a MFM not a triangle. But spending the first half of the book thinking that was a struggle for me.

Overall the plot was amazing, spice was awesome, character development was great!

4.25/5 stars
4/5 spice

Can't wait for the final installment. Per usual, the cliffy is a big one so gooooood luck!

Fan-fucking-tastic.
I'm loving how alpha Danny is but we're also getting more of her more emotional side. Leon and Kai are both ott JP, but in such a fun way. They are so over the moon with her, it's a pleasure reading this series. Heat factor is off the charts too.
On to the next!!

Full review coming tomorrow but holy shit that was amazing! The spice was top tier and the plot twists never stopped. Tate always pulls something crazy at the end of every book but I really didn’t see that one coming, it was completely unlike anything else she’s ever wrote!

The story just gets better and better and I can't wait to discover who is behind the hits on Dany. I like Leon a bit more than Kai and am still suspicious of Jude regardless of the developments in this book and I really really hope things aren't done with Carlos. I love the plot twist at the end.

As always, Tate James leaves me absolutely REELING with her ending. I don't know that I'll ever get used to her cliffhangers, but they're both perfect and stressful. She just knows how to write characters that I consistently grow attached to, and then she proceeds to rip my heart out of my chest at every opportunity.

This series might be her most action packed yet, and Dead Drop kept me at the edge of my metaphorical seat (I definitely read this in bed wrapped in a blanket burrito) from beginning to end. There is just so much to love about Danny, the FMC - she is an absolute badass in every sense of the word and her romantic interests keep pace with her every step of the way.

I'm obsessed with the way Tate James writes banter, tension and character dynamics and I think I always will be. She's just so damn good.

Surprise, surprise, I read another Tate James book in one day. This series is becoming my favorite. I love this group, and their mess and banter and how feral they can be.

Danny is top tier as far as characters go, I love her and would love to be her friend (but also not because I so wouldn’t survive, I’m not built for their lives). I love how badass she is and witty, she’s either pulling a gun on someone or being incredibly sassy, and I’m here for it.

Leon and Kai action, yes please. These two are so possessive and childish and their antics are nonstop. I do adore them, I mean is it possible to dislike a Tate James man? I didn’t think so. I will say Im obsessed with how unhinged Leon is, like I get great delights reading his povs.

Overall, Dead Drop is a phenomenal sequel to Honey Trap. Read this asap, you will not be disappointed. This group deserves the devotion, no matter how insane they are.

The betraying body syndrome irks me to no end and Danny has all but let her vag make her life decisions in this book. Girl get it together. One of your love interests sexually assaulted you and now can’t let you go, and the other is so obsessed he’s stalking you and making a claim. They. Aren’t. Worth. It.

Tate James couldn’t even make *one* redeeming character in this. All I ask is for one person to root for. At least Danny got her head on straight towards the end, but shit still went sideways.

I’m invested enough to continue the series, but if every single character was killed off I wouldn’t be heartbroken.

I most definitely blew through this book. I’ve said it before but there’s just something about Tate’s writing. You could convince me to read her shopping list. I bet she’d find a way to make it spicy too. 😂

We can start there, this book is deliciously spicy, there’s one scene that will probably live in my head rent free for the foreseeable future.

I’m loving our girl Danny and her journey as a character. She’s been under the thumb of the Guild for so long and with everything that’s happened, she’s feeling a little displaced. Who is she without it?
Leon had me a little mad at him through this, mostly because he was such a jerk face to Kai. I still love him, and his obsession with Danny is everything. He also has that he’s so smart and capable that it’s almost inhuman vibes that I love in a book man.
Kai, the sweet boy, I just love him. He’s so different from Leon and I love him for it.

Y’all I don’t know how this trilogy is going to end and it has me a little nervous. But I trust Tate, so I’ll try not to freak out.

If you love over the top, jealous/possessive MMCs that would be walking red flags in real life, this is for YOU.

This installment was melodramatic but I ate it up and couldn't put it down. There is barely any plot development, there's a lot of smut, and I am just enjoying the fuck out of it, okay?

I think it's fascinating how Danny is this big bad mercenary, but instead of being an unfeeling shell, she's coming into who she is with the help of the romantic and platonic relationships in her life outside of The Guild. I like that's badass but vulnerable, top assassin in the game but not ungodly strong (makes her human), and how she knows what she wants and embraces her sexuality.

Leon and Kai are plucked straight from my dreams, idk what that says about me, but holy shit. Leon is revealing himself to be more and more unhinged and I am REVELING in it. Kai is a little bit of a whiny toddler at times, throwing tantrums and is really hot headed, but the filth that comes out his mouth has ME dripping. They're so possessive, protective, and have big cavemen energy that makes me a puddle...sitting in a puddle...

Yeah so TLDR; the plot doesn't progress much, there's a ton of sex, and the writing is crack. I can't wait to get into the next one and get my next hit.

Edit to add: oh yeah, Leon totally skins and cuts off this one guy's fingers because he touched Danny and I think that was the most romantic thing I've ever read.

When I saw that this book is 559 pages long, I had a slight moment of worry and dread that it would be padded with repetitive spicy scenes - but even though, yes, there was a lot of spice, Tate James managed to keep it fresh, and it never felt like I was just being put through the motions.

Drop Dead is book two in The Guild series and follows fmc Danny, a highly skilled mercenary being targeted by her employer, The Circle. Along with her two battling love interests, Leon and Kai, she’s working to unpick the past and expose The Guild's secrets.

This book is full of drama on all sides - Danny literally cannot catch a break. If someone isn't making an attempt on her life, it's her boyfriends threatening to kill each other. I really enjoy both Leon and Kai. They're very different but completely matched in their level of obsession with Danny. Kai is sweet and loveable but possessive, and Leon is beyond intelligent and capable but with a worrying side of sociopath. The spice is as expected from TJ - 10/10 and excellent.

I love that Danny takes no shit from either of the guys. She truly lives by her own rules and is strong even though she's experiencing an underlying feeling of displacement now she's being targeted by The Guild.

I will say the majority of this book, around eighty to ninety per cent, is relationship drama. The cliffhanger of book one is resolved very quickly (as with most TJ books), and not much is uncovered until the final chapters. However, overall, I blew through it and can't wait to jump into Kill Order. I'm intrigued to see how the story will be wrapped up in the final book.

If you've read the Hades and Madison Kate books, you'll recognise a few familiar faces and settings in this book.

Well I just liked Danny more in the first book. This book literally made me think that Tate James wrote another Hades character. Sigh..let's be honest..MK, Hades, Danny, Kit etc. are basically the same character..just that Hades and Danny have more of a "I'm all the shit" personality.

The story didn't really progress a lot but at the same time a lot more shit happened here as opposed to book 1. It's annoying that this seemingly unemotional woman gets stuck between two guys only for her to finally choose herself (did not see that coming since page 1 book 1 🙄). I mean I thought it was a given with her set up to be this "ice cold merc". What did she think? She's going to skip into the sunset holding hands with the two of them?! Lol.

First of all thank you Tate and PeachyKeenas for the arc!!! Spoiler free review.

Freaking Tate James...you'd think I'd learn to not binge read her books...I SHOULD know better. I did not do that obviously and I regret nothing 😂So wow...just wow...I cannot say much without giving something away. All I will say is does anyone know the name of a good therapist because I love Leon and I am pretty sure that is not a normal or healthy reaction to him 😂 Doesn't matter though because I adored him in book 1 and now I am completely obsessed with him. Not to say that Kai is not without his charms because he is definitely yummmmyyyy!! Also Danny, such a freaking badass I love her, she is just awesome lol Ok I will be back with a better review later! Loved the book, love the story, love the characters, and that ending....ughhhhhh. Go preorder book 2 and 3 if you haven't already

Genre: Adult Organized Crime Romance
Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Reading Rate: ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 I didn’t get sucked in and devour this read like I usually do with Tate books, I think it might be my lack of connection with the characters
Steam: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 this book was more smut heavy then plot unlike other books I have read in this world
Recommend if you like: Hades series

While this was still a good book I didn’t feel it held up to the rest of Tate’s work. don’t get me wrong it was action packed but it felt more like a filler book to tie Danny and the guys together in some way before moving on to the rest of the plot. I felt she did more going back and forth between the guys and just wanting sexy time than trying to sort things out…. Which did lead to a whole lot of smut content throughout the book.

I really enjoyed some of the cameos and getting to spend a little time in Shadow Grove. The book did end on a but of a cliffhanger but not as dramatic as I am used to with this world. It left me more exited for new things in the next book versus freaking out about how things were going to turn out. I will for sure be reading the next book in the series as soon as it releases.

TATE MOTHER FUCKING JAMES HAS DONE IT AGAIN ❤️‍🔥

First of all, I was so incredibly lucky to win an ARC of Dead Drop after entering every comp possible, so thank you to the book gods for having my back and helping a sister out 😂

Let me tell you, THIS BOOK IS EVERYTHING!! ❤️‍🔥

From the very first chapter I was in an absolute chokehold and honestly felt I couldn’t read fast enough 😂 My mind was going a million miles an hour trying to keep up with everything that was happening so much so that I got no sleep last night 🤯😂

I loved so many things about this book! The banter is pure gold, the character progression is amazing and the spicy scenes were hot AF🔥 If you’ve read it, you know exactly what I’m talking about 🤤🥵

I nearly spat my drink out laughing with Stanley’s appearances too 🪴😂

There were SO MANY plot twists and we even get a quick appearance from some of our MK and Hades faves too 🖤

In pure Tate fashion though, there is a killer cliffhanger and man I am here for it!!

I can’t wait to see what Tate has in store for us with Kill Order.. I think I may just die 😂

If you haven’t read Honey Trap, do it right now! You have 3 days to get up to speed before Dead Drop is released on the 28th ! If you have read Honey Trap, be prepared! This will blow your minds ❤️‍🔥

If loser, whiny Kai wasn’t so much a part of this book, it would be rated much higher. I cannot for the life of me understand what Danny sees in him (and kind of don’t believe the author does either—I mean, it’s pretty clear who is framed in the better light.) Reading Danny trying to scramble for reasons why she likes Kai is like pulling teeth.

On the other hand, Leon is a star and I am obsessed with him. Any scene with him in it is automatically ten times better. He’s one of my favorite “psychopath” book boyfriends now and while I like Danny outside of her unwarranted obsession with Kai, Leon absolutely deserves better.

I’m still intrigued enough to read the finale of the series, but I’m pretty disappointed in how long and draggy this one was.

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Moral fiber? I don’t know her

I think it must take a certain level of brain damage to enjoy this type of book as much as I’m doing right now, but I’ve never claimed to be anything as mundane as sane. Things are dialed up to 11 in this installment as Danny is trying to unveil secrets, dodge betrayals, and keep herself alive. All while two fine af men vie for her attentions.

First of all, I have an apology to make. Leon, sorry I thought you were uninteresting at any point in this series. You my man, are the whole package. Nerdy smart, Machiavellian when needed, and singularly unhinged when it comes to Danny, so unapologetically bloodthirsty it’s adorable. A combination of torture/murder/threats is their foreplay. Kai is still super sweet and all, but the dear man is so clueless and confused it’s half endearing and half pitiful. Big himbo energy. While Leon and Danny come off as equals, damage and loose screws and all, Kai always feels a step behind, even as he has delusions of “protecting” Danny with his caveman nonsense. Still, he’s like the conscience in this dynamic (I’m being relative here) so I guess there’s balance. Not that I still know where things will eventually head romantically. Although it does get kinky and scorching hot up in this book.

As things progress with her and the big brutes, what I love the most is how Danny does not take any bullshit from either of them. She has both wrapped around her finger, and while pesky emotions are starting to appear, she does not let them change who she is at the core. Which is a tough effing bad arse. Her kink is her men doing unspeakable things for her, and to her, and every single heinous act they commit in the name of their obsession is an incredible rush. Told you, take your moral compass out, put it in a little box, and set it safely aside before you read these books.

Before I start this review I just wanted to say thank you Tate and PeachyKeenas for providing me with an arc!

Damn. This book was crazy good! I should’ve known Tate James was going to hit me hard with the twists and turns in this book.

This book is action packed and oh so steamy! Danny is trying to figure out why a circle member wants her dead and well, obviously a lot more happens, but I won’t spoil anything… But for real though, this was such an addicting book and I am still in shock after finishing it. Leon is quite the guy…. He’s great though. Maybe a lil crazy? Yes, but I love him. Kai, well, I love him too! I am obsessed with Kai and Leon. Gah, I always fall for the bad guys… Oh well. Anyways, let’s talk about Danny. She is a freaking badass and I absolutely love her! She doesn’t take anyone’s crap, that’s what I love about Tate’s writing, she always writes badass female characters! I honestly could go on and on about this book, but I won’t. Just go and pre order this book right now!!! Right NOW! Alright I’m good…

Seriously though, this was a fantastic read and I can’t wait for the third book!

5 stars!!
